Why we built HEIC.IS

Hundreds of millions of people take photos on iPhones every day, and those photos are saved as HEIC. The moment they need to upload one to a form, open it on a Windows PC or send it to someone on Android, many of them discover that the file won't open.

Most online converters solve that by asking you to upload your photos to their servers. We think personal photos deserve better. HEIC.IS converts images in your browser, on your own device, so they never have to leave it.

Our principles

• Private by design. HEIC → JPG, PNG and WebP conversion runs locally. The only server-side conversions are those that create HEIC files, and those files are deleted immediately.
• No accounts, no watermarks. Open the page and convert. That's it.
• Honest information. We explain what happens to your files, what metadata is and how formats compare — without exaggerated claims.
• Quality first. Orientation, colour profiles and metadata are handled carefully so converted photos look right.

How it works

The converter uses libheif (opens in a new tab), the open-source HEIF library, compiled to WebAssembly and running in a background thread of your browser. Images are encoded with your browser's built-in encoders, with WebAssembly fallbacks (MozJPEG and libwebp) where a browser can't do it natively. HEIC encoding on the server uses libheif with the x265 HEVC encoder.

How the site is funded

HEIC.IS is free. It may show clearly labelled advertising, which is only loaded if you allow it in the cookie settings. Ads never appear inside the converter.
