Why use this tool

Why use WebP on websites?

Images are often the heaviest part of a web page. WebP was designed to reduce that weight: at comparable visual quality, WebP files are typically smaller than JPGs. Smaller images load faster, use less mobile data and help Core Web Vitals such as Largest Contentful Paint.

Every current major browser supports WebP, and most content management systems — including WordPress, Shopify and Squarespace — accept WebP uploads.

  • Size: a 12- or 24-megapixel iPhone photo is far larger than any screen needs. For full-width images choose Max 1920 px; for content images Max 1280 px is usually enough.
  • Quality: Balanced is a good default for photos on the web. Use High for hero images and photography portfolios.
  • Metadata: choose Remove all for public web images. It removes camera details and GPS location and saves a few kilobytes.

Browser support and local conversion

Chrome, Edge and Firefox can create WebP files natively, so conversion is instant. Safari cannot yet create WebP images from a canvas, so HEIC.IS automatically switches to a WebAssembly WebP encoder on iPhone, iPad and Mac Safari. Either way the conversion runs on your device.

WebP or AVIF?

AVIF can compress even further than WebP, but encoding is slower and support in older software is weaker. WebP remains the most practical modern format for most sites. If you need maximum compatibility — for example for email newsletters — use HEIC to JPG instead.

Frequently asked questions

Is WebP better than JPG?

For websites, usually yes: WebP files are typically smaller at similar quality and support transparency. For emailing or printing, JPG is still more widely accepted.

Does Safari support WebP?

Yes, Safari displays WebP images on iPhone, iPad and Mac. HEIC.IS also creates WebP files in Safari using a built-in WebAssembly encoder.

What size should web images be?

Rarely more than 1920 px wide. Use the Size option to downscale iPhone photos while converting — this saves far more space than lowering quality.

Will WebP keep transparency from HEIC?

Yes. WebP supports an alpha channel, so transparent areas are preserved.
