How to Convert HEIC to JPG on a Mac

Macs open HEIC files natively, so conversion is mostly about compatibility: sending photos to Windows users, uploading them to websites or using them in older apps. macOS has several built-in ways to convert, each suited to a different situation.

1. Finder Quick Action (fastest for a few files)

On macOS Monterey and later:

1. Select one or more HEIC files in Finder.
2. Right-click (or Control-click) and choose Quick Actions → Convert Image.
3. Choose JPEG as the format, pick an image size and click Convert to JPEG.

The JPGs are saved next to the originals. You can also choose whether to keep metadata.

2. Preview

1. Open the HEIC file in Preview.
2. Choose File → Export.
3. Set Format to JPEG, adjust the quality slider and click Save.

To convert several files, open them together in Preview, select all thumbnails in the sidebar and use File → Export Selected Images. Click Options in the save dialog to choose JPEG.

3. The Photos app

If your pictures live in the Photos library:

1. Select the photos.
2. Choose File → Export → Export [n] Photos.
3. Set Photo Kind to JPEG, choose quality and size, and export.

Photos also lets you include or exclude location information in the export options.

4. Terminal: the sips command

For automation, macOS includes sips (scriptable image processing system). To convert every HEIC file in the current folder:

formatOptions 90 sets JPEG quality (0–100).

5. In your browser
